Christ the King

Today we bring the church year to a close with the festival of Christ the King. We honor Jesus Christ as the "King" of our hearts, our homes, our social habitat, our whole earth.
We celebrate that Jesus Christ is the center of our lives and the head of the Church. The great "King of kings and Lord of lords" is the focus of our lives. The reality of Christ as King is not just religious rhetoric nor simply wishful thinking. This fact is demonstrated by three events happening today:
At the 8:00 Mass three adults formally enter the RCIA Program in order to proudly and boldly step forward to become full members of the Roman Catholic Church: Mark Swain, Samuel Ervin, and his wife Ann Ervin. We welcome them, and we stand by them with the support of our prayers and example. May Christ truly be their King!
At 9:00am we celebrate Christ as King of our faith community and of our neighborhood with a special all-parish meeting in which we dialogue with each other about our priorities and strategies to make our parish and our environs a "lived experience of togetherness" in which we support one another and provide for each other's safety and well-being.
At the 10:30 Mass seventeen of our eight graders will publicly declare their intent to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation and ask for the support of our good example and prayers. They are Anthony Bequette, Rachel Binger, Paul Bishop, Daniel Buck, Joseph Busiek, Jillian Connelly, Ryan Crouch, David Decipida, Jared Degenhart, Courtney Gassner, Adam Halbauer, Robert Leicht, Ian Penrose, Jill Rice, Rachel Ruskin, Emily Thebeau, and Melanie Yore. We congratulate them for their courageous step into adulthood and their noble proclamation of making Christ their King by the power of the Spirit. We pray for them, and we thank them for their choice to be an active part of our faith community.
We also commend those particular adults of the parish who are willing to serve as personal prayer partners for each of the confirmands. (If anyone else would like to pray for a special eighth grader as he or she prepares for Confirmation, call the school at 752-3397.)
Yes and Amen! Jesus Christ is King!

"He received dominion, glory and kingship; nations and peoples of every language serve Him" (Dan 7:12). We serve Christ by opening our hearts and hands to one another. Stewardship calls us to a life of service. This service may take many forms; visiting the elderly, feeding the poor, comforting the sick, welcoming a stranger...

DID YOU KNOW???

A Brief Look at the History of Advent (Part 3)

Historical conditions in both the church and among emerging peoples in western Europe finally determined the length and spirit of the season of Advent. In Gaul an Advent theme, separate from that of Rome, evolved under the influence of missionaries from Ireland. They promoted a penitential spirit, emphasizing not Jesus' first coming in the Incarnation, but rather his final coming in judgment at the end-times. Purple was used for vestments, and the Alleluia and Glory to God were omitted from the Mass.
The evolution of Advent was also influenced by traditions in the monasteries of Gaul. In 567, a synod at Tours, France, clarified the monastic practice of fasting on all Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with a greater intensity during Lent, the week following Pentecost, and the month of December up to Christmas. Fifteen years later this same tradition of fasting was ordered for the laity from the Feast of St. Martin (November 11) until Christmas. More next week. Greg Dues. Catholic Customs and Traditions.

Parish News

THANKSGIVING DAY: We as a parish community will celebrate Thanksgiving Day, November 27, in two very special ways:
We will have only one Mass at 9:00am as a sign of our unity and solidarity.
Also, we invite you to bring along canned goods and dried goods for the Food Pantry. In fact, we invite families and organizations to go together to prepare one large paper or plastic bag that contains the following:
2 cans of canned meat or fish
4 16-oz. cans of vegetables
4 16-oz. cans of fruit
4 10-oz. cans of soup
1 package of noodles or pasta or macaroni and cheese
1 package of cereal, either dry or cookable
1 package of powdered milk
1 jar of peanut butter
1 family-size bar of soap
2 boxes of pancake mix
2 boxes of instant rice
1 bottle of syrup
At the Preparation of Gifts the congregation will process to the altar and place its offerings -- along with any monetary donations which will also go to the Food Pantry -- before the communion rail.
We look forward to volunteers after the Mass who will carry the gifts to the Food Pantry.

BAKE SALE: The Boy Scouts Mothers Club of Troop 32 will sponsor a bake sale today, November 23, after the 8:00 and 10:30 Masses.

OUR NEXT GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP will meet on Tuesday, November 25, at 10:30am in the West Meeting Room.

CHRISTMAS CARDS: Call Betty Harre at 352-4582 for Christmas cards of St. Anthony's Christmas window; a limited supply is available.

CHRISTMAS BASKETS: Requests for Christmas Baskets will be taken from December 1 to December 12 by Sharon Kitchell (773-3863). The baskets can be picked up in the Meramec Cafeteria on Saturday, December 20.

DON'T THROW IT AWAY! Your leftover crafts, sewing supplies, and never-finished projects can help our choir raise money for our parish and for choir supplies. For more information call Dorothy at 776-1412.

CHANGES IN OUR WORSHIP AID

Now that you've had a chance to hear about the changes in our worship aid subscription, many are doubtless wondering why. After all, to many of you, the old approach wasn't "broken," so why "fix it!" Well, there are several reasons:
Liturgical participation. The Church's directives encourage us to be "listeners," not "readers." Why? Remember that the spoken word is itself the action of the Spirit. "And the word was with God, and the word was God." Changing to the new format will encourage us to get our heads out of a book and recognize the divine presence in the spoken Word.
Cost savings. With this one change, we will cut our subscription cost by one-third, saving the parish nearly $1,000 every year. Obviously this is important for our budget.
Less work and less mess. With six different missalettes every year, we regularly had to enlist a bunch of folks to help remove the old ones and replace them with the new ones. Now, this is a once-a- year-job. Along those lines, we will have that much less "stuff" sitting in the holders and on the benches.
More music available. One problem before was that only part of the hymns were available during any one season. Now they will be available year-round.
Thanks for your attention about the new changes. I hope that you will benefit from them and that the quality of your worship to God will continue to grow.
--Doug Potts, music minister

WRAP UP TO CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

On the weekend of December 6-7 we will conclude our parish's drive to contribute to the Archdiocesan Capital Campaign Called "Returning God's Gifts, Sharing Our Hope."
During the Masses those who have not been personally contacted will be asked to give a pledge or gift. Pledge cards will be distributed; you will be asked to fill them out and return them after the Mass.
If you wish to offer a donation or make a pledge before this weekend, please contact Rose McGill at the parish office (353-7470).
Remember that the parish's Building Fund receives ten percent of what you give.

WORLD AIDS AWARENESS DAY

Mighty Big Thanks!

Every year the Quilters' Group of the Ladies' Sodality offers a most generous donation to the parish as a result of its fine work. Earlier this month the Quilters presented the pastor with a check for $11,000. Father Benet and all the parish extends to these hard-working ladies their gratitude and appreciation for their generosity, dogged efforts, and faithful perseverance. God bless you in abundance!
