HISTORIC ST. MARY OF VICTORIES CHURCH, founded at Third and Gratiot Streets in the "Chouteau's Landing" district of Downtown (south of the Gateway Arch), is one of the beloved churches of Old St. Louis. Established in 1843, the charming neoclassical red brick edifice was designed by noted St. Louis architects Franz Saler and George I. Barnett. (Barnett would later go on to design the "New Cathedral" Basilica on Lindell Boulevard and other noteworthy churches and public buildings in the Victorian Era.) St. Mary's ornate interior, featuring hand-painted frescoes, statuary and carvings, was designed by Prof. Max Schneiderhahn, the city's first professional church artist. The ornate statue of St. Mary of Victories, cast in 1844, still stands in the Sanctuary. The church was the second Catholic church to be constructed in the city after the Old Cathedral.

Originally established for German immigrants to St. Louis in the 19th century, Old St. Mary's enjoyed a second rebirth as a spiritual and cultural home to Hungarian immigrants who arrived after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. Today St. Mary of Victories proudly serves the descendants of these groups as well as the south Downtown business community. Visitors and numerous tourists enjoy the quaint, decorative charm and tranquility of the old church and its landscaped Old World courtyard. Masses, including weddings, funerals and regularly scheduled weekday and weekend services are still held at the parish. A fully equipped church hall and catering facility also operates as part of the parish outreach to the general community and St. I.ouisans of all faiths.

THE FRIENDS OF HISTORIC ST. MARY OF VICTORIES, a non-profit, community-based group dedicated to the preservation and future mission of the historic church, and the redevelopment of Downtown St. Louis, thank you for your support and generosity. We invite you to come back to visit (and worship) often!

BLESSED FRANCIS X. SEELOS
REDEMPTORIST

On October 5, 2000, all Redemptorists, lay associates, and friends were invited to attend a special Mass in honor of our newly beatified Father Seelos. The Mass took place at 10:00 a.m. in the church of St. Mary of Victories, 744 South Third Street, St. Louis, MO. Father Seelos died on October fourth, but since Saint Francis already had that date, the feast of Blessed Father Seelos was set for the next day, the fifth. The feast is not only a Redemptorist feast, but the American Bishops have approved it for the whole country.

The church of St. Mary of Victories was chosen because it was here that Father Seelos made his Missouri debut. Together with his Redemptorist companions Father Schneider, Jacob, and Gulielm, he preached a mission in German from the first to fifteenth of October, 1865.

The main celebrant of the Mass was the Most Rev. Michael J. Sheridan, vicar for education of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. He was assisted at the altar by Father Richard Thibodeau, C.Ss.R., provincial of the Denver Redemptorist Province and Rev. Paul J. Spielman, pastor of St. John Nepomuk Parish and administrator of St. Mary. Other concelebrants were also welcome.

We might note once again that the only other American man to have been beatified (and later canonized) is our fellow Redemptorist Saint John Neumann. We Redemptorists now have four canonized saints, four Blesseds, three Venerables, twelve individual Servants of God plus the twenty-one martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.

Locally, the Redemptorist priests are based at Ligouri, MO where they publish the Ligourian magazine as well as two new books on the life of Fr. Seelos, authored by Alicia VonStanwitz and Rev. Carl Hoegerl, C.SS.R. Contact Ligouri Publications for information on the book titles and price.
