BAPTISM OF THE LORD

Today is the liturgical end of the Christmas Season. We celebrate the baptism of the Lord. Baptism not only marks the beginning of Christ's ministry, it also marks the dawn of a new era in human history. We were given a new birth in the Holy Spirit with our own baptism. This is a real birth of God in us and so we continue to celebrate the birth of Jesus in history and in us.

Martin Luther King Day

January 19 is Martin Luther King Day. What can you do to honor the remarkable Dr. King and to make real his dream of harmony among the races and equality for all. The diocese will hold its 22nd annual liturgy in honor of Dr. King on Sunday, January 18 at 1:30 pm at St. Francis Xavier (College) Church, Grand and Lindell Blvd. Bishop Edward Braxton will be the main celebrant and homilist. All are invited to attend.

HANDICAP FACILITIES COMPLETE

We are happy to announce that the handicap facilities have been added to the men's and women's rest rooms on the first floor. We regret the inconvenience of the delay but we hope the facilities will be of service to our parishioners.

Wedding Anniversary

On the Sunday closest to Valentine's Day we have honored those couples in our parish celebrating their 25, 40, 50, 60th or more wedding anniversary in that calendar year. Please contact the rectory, if you have a marker anniversary this year. We would like to honor you at 11:00 am mass on February 15 and invite you and your immediate family to be our guests at a luncheon to follow in the cafeteria. We need to know how many family members will be joining you so that we can prepare adequately. Please call and let us know.

MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION

Today, January 11, at 7:30 pm. Archbishop Justin Rigali will have a Solemn Vesper Service and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica to celebrate the second year of preparation for the great jubilee of the year 2000. Refreshments afterwards in Boland Hall. The entire diocese is invited.

Thank You

My sincere thanks to everyone for the cards, prayers, and all the help given when they were needed the most. They were greatly appreciated. Leona Whiteley

Announcing

CHURCH UNITY WEEK

It is a tradition in the Christian community to pray for unity among the denominations during the Church Unity Octave. Culminating on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25) the Church prays that we might overcome the divisions and prejudices that have divided us for centuries. Some claim we are in an ecumenical winter, others see tremendous signs of hope as families struggle in their everyday life to seek religious unity in inter-faith marriages. We will be having a major Lenten program on March 8 at 1:30 pm with all the Union Road Church. We will focus on "hope" as the message we need to bring to our Society. Please pray for Christian unity this week.

Important

TEACHERS UNION UPDATE

As parish administration (Pastor & Principal) and the Parish Board of Education, we have been diligently passing out all communications from the Archdiocesan Education Office and from ACE (The Archdiocesan Catholic Educators Group) to keep the parish faculty informed. Faculty members have been told that no repercussions will happen, if they join the ACE group. At this point, we are waiting for the Archbishop to issue some directive as to the Archdiocesan position and what role the parishes will play. A formal statement by the pastor has been sent to the Archbishop requesting a speedy and just decision on this matter. We have the highest respect for our teachers and hope this unfortunate slow-down in events can be resolved quickly. As a parish, we are open to negotiating with a representative group from the Archdiocese or the individual teachers. We are waiting to hear from the Archbishop concerning his formal policy. We will then take this policy to the Board of Education of the parish for future decision-making and/or consultation with parish leadership and teachers. Our faculty has always been committed to Catholic education for the students and they are committed to the goals of the parish. We support them in this endeavor to achieve a just solution to the dilemmas of salary benefits representation, and grievance procedures.
