This Week In Our Parish

CHRISTIAN UNITY WEEK

- January 25, the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul marks the conclusion of the National Prayer for Christian Unity Week. We will be having a special workshop on March 8 at St. John's United Church of Christ along with many other Catholic & Protestant Churches from our South County Area. The priests, ministers and parish staffs have been working on this workshop for over a year. The theme will be "Hope for the 21st Century." We hope you will mark your calendars for this very special ecumenical event. It will be from 1:30 to 6:30 pm. Dinner will be included.

PRO-LIFE SIGN-UPS

- Cards will be distributed at all the masses this weekend asking voting-age parishioners to notify their representatives of their stand against abortion and partial-birth abortion procedures. If you would like to receive more information please write to: NCHLA, P.O. Box 97234, Washington, D.C. 20069-7234 for more info on the "People of Life" program sponsored by the American Bishops. You will also find enclosed in today's bulletin an informational flyer pertaining to the partial-birth abortion procedure. Bells of Sorrow, Bells of Joy will be ringing throughout the Archdiocese on Thursday, January 22 at 5 pm to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs Wade.

EUCHARISTIC DEVOTIONS

- Are you interested in helping begin or increase Eucharistic Adoration in our parish - in response to the request of Archbishop Rigali? A day-long Lay Conference on Eucharistic Adoration will be held Saturday, February 7, at St. Raymond's Church - beginning with Mass at 9 am, celebrated by Archbishop Rigali. Anyone interested in assisting in this effort to begin a program here at MPB and in attending the conference on how to set this up is asked to call Fr. Ryan immediately. Names must be sent in ahead of time to register for this conference.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

- This week is Catholic Schools Week. Tuesday will be Parent Observation Day. Thursday will be Grandparents Day and Parent Teacher Conferences. Monday & Wednesday will be special dress days. We are very proud of our school. Come see! "Schools You Can Believe In."

STRATEGIC PLAN

- The Archdiocese will announce its action plans to implement the Strategic Plan at a diocesan-wide meeting to be held at the Convention Center on Wednesday, January 28. Parish representatives from the Council, Finance Committee, Board of Education, and one member at large along with the Priests, Principal of the School & DRE are required to be at the meeting. This process will set the vision for parishes, establish criteria for viability and vitality of parishes for their continued existence and establish action plans to implement the goals and objectives set earlier by the Strategic Plan. The Parish Council will be meeting on Saturday, January 31 to discuss these issues and the implications of our parish.

ST. JUSTIN ADULT TRIVIA

THANK YOU

- from Feed My People for the Giving Tree gifts and canned goods recently received.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS & UNIONS

- The Archbishop has made his final announcement that he will not be negotiating with the ACE (Archdiocesan Catholic Educators) Union. Instead he has called for a new Partnership between Teachers, Parishes & the Archdiocese. The plan calls for a 20 member Parish Teacher Compensation Committee. Half of the committee members would be teachers elected by peers, the other half appointed by the Board of Catholic Education. This committee will be on-going & negotiate the issues at hand. Negotiations will begin as soon as representatives are elected. The archbishop still maintains the final decision making authority to himself. Guidelines for addressing working-condition problems & grievance procedures will be forthcoming at a later date. All parishes are expected to comply with policies set by the Archdiocese. There has been a threat of a law suit filed by ACE to force "representation by the union" issue to be brought forward. At the time this bulletin is going to press, we do not have word on how this is proceeding. All our teachers have been informed of the proposed union and the options involved. No teacher from our faculty has chosen to join the union at this point. If a strike is called, and picket-lines are set up, it is the recommendation of the Parish Council and Board of Education that we not have a confrontation. Should that event happen, we will not ask families to cross the picket line. School will be closed until a further action/agreement can be arrived at. We are not against faculty members joining the union or any other association. No censures or consequences will happen, if they do join the union. The task at hand is to get all sides working together in a new partnership to give shape to the mission of the Church as we educate our children in the message and tradition of Jesus. We pray that this new partnership can reach a just solution to the compensation question and representational needs of all concerned.
