SON OF MINE

1. My son, your troubled eyes search mine, 3. When lives of black and white entwine,

Puzzled and hurt by colour line. And men in brotherhood combine

Your black skin as soft as velvet shine; But I’ll tell instead of brave and fine,

What can I tell you , son of mine? This would I tell you, son of mine.

2. I could tell you of heartbreak, hatred blind,

I could tell you of crimes that shame mankind,

Of brutal wrong and deeds malign,

Of rape and murder , son of mine; Kath Walker

FOR ONE DYING

Miss Sutherland MacDonald, 1873 - 1956

Now, in that place where all birds cease to sing ,

and paths grow faint and melt into the hills,

you pause , tasting the wind; for it is spring,

and down on Ellendale’s wide water spills

a dust of petals. In this last September,

opening your hands to seize the golden light

(your hands, which flowers and animals remember,

and trees, and children) you will enter night.

I am no more the child whom you made cry

so readily with your sad ballad-tales,

not skilled to soothe the life that prays to die,

not skilled to pray. But must, since all else fails,

trust that your Lord, who owes you some amend,

grant you a quiet night, and a perfect end.

Randolph Stow.

  1. Read the following poem and answer the following questions.

A CHILD HALF ASLEEP

Stealthily parting the small-hours silence,

a hardly-embodied figment of his brain

comes down to sit with me

as I work late.

Flat-footed, as though his legs and feet were still asleep.

On a stool, staring into the fire,

his dummy dangling.

Fire ignites the small coals of his eyes :

it stares back through the holes

into his head, into the darkness.

I ask what woke him.

"A wolf dreamed me, ‘ he says.

FROM A STREET CORNER

Like snails I see the people go Some peer about , some creep on blind,

Along the pavement , row on row; But not one leaves his shell behind.

And each one on his shoulder bears And I , who think I see so well,

His coiling shell of petty cares - Peer at the rest but cannot tell

The spiral of his own affairs. How much is cut off by my shell.

My personal robot tries to read That in a man you might call fear.

The message in my brain For three seconds I squeeze the trigger.

But my hypocrisy defeats him. The fine rod of light penetrates him.

He smiles back at my false smile. He falls to the ground

In many ways he is almost human. His eyes turning to water.

The message is absorbed. Something like a song

Indians dressed in collie straw under the slant

of rain; a stork in silhouette transfixed in a

swamp; soft, melancolic, water-washed

colours.
