5 Paragraph Essay Plan

To what extent are the first three chapters of your current novel a good exposition to the novel ? Discuss this question with reference to three different ways the author makes the reader interested in her/his story.

Steps in writing the essay.

1. Before writing the introduction you need to do the following

Interpreting the question

• underline the key words
• write down, beside those words, other words which help you to understand what they really mean

Formulating a response to the question that you have just interpreted

• understand what occurs in the first three chapters
• look at the different techniques by which an author exposes us to her novel
• decide if you think that the first three chapters are a good exposition to the novel or not

Working out your three intentions - the three ways in which you will go about supporting your answer to the question

• work out which of the exposition techniques you think you can use to support your answer to this question ( remember you need to discuss three different aspects to make up your three intentions later on.)
• take notes on those three different techniques with specific examples in the novel. For example, if you decide that the exposition is good because the conflict between character and the society is described quite well and we know something will result soon, then we must take notes on what gives us that impression with specific reference to the first three chapters.

2. Writing your introduction

If you read over your introduction after you have written it and you are able to say that you have done the following things , then you have written a proper introduction.

Will the reader understand

• that you will be looking at the exposition of the first three chapters of your novel?
• what exposition means ?
• what makes a good exposition ?
• whether or not you think the first three chapters are a good exposition to the novel ?
• how you are going to go about demonstrating what you think specifically( Your three intentions ) ?

Some standard ways of introducing certain sentences in an introduction

1. Your first sentence can be a general statement about the main focus of your essay which in this case is exposition. ( In your last essay it was ‘genre’ ) You can therefore begin by saying

2. The next sentence is a good place to mention the novel that you will be addressing in the essay and your view on whether or not it is a good exposition

3. When you want to introduce the three intentions, a good way to start is to write

(2 ) ___________________________and ( 3 ) ____________________________________________________________

will demonstrate that the first three chapters chapter of _______ is in fact a good exposition to the rest of the novel

3. Writing your three main body paragraphs

Now that you know how you are going to go about answering the essay question AND you have all your notes on each intention before you, it is time to start writing the main part of the essay. In each of the three main body paragraphs, you need to

• describe the technique that you think demonstrates that the first chapter is a good exposition to the novel
• give your reasons for thinking so
• provide the reader with an argument to justify what you think- you must be specific with examples from the first chapter

After reading what you write in each paragraph , you should be able to ask yourself –

Will the reader

• understand what the intention is exactly ?
• be given a description of how the exposition technique is used ?
• believe your opinion because you have supported your view with examples from the novel.?

Good opening phrases in each paragraph could be

4. Writing a good conclusion.

There are three sections in a conclusion

A general restatement of the question

The exposition in _________ is _______________________

A summary of your intentions

A concluding statement about the relevance of the focus in your essay- in this case the importance of understanding exposition in any novel .
