NARRATVIE TECHNIQUES: STORY TELLING

• Make sure that your character (yourself) possesses traits and behaves in ways which your audience approves of or admires. (Sympathetic character)
• Be careful how you write your events

When writers convert a series of real events into a novel or other form of narrative they often use some of the following techniques to make a story more interesting or easier to follow or to highlight certain themes:

• omitting events
• compressing time
• starting and ending with dramatic points
• relating some events in more detail than others
• combining a number of real people into a single character
• focusing only on the actions and reactions of a limited number of people
• simplifying the personalities of real people so that the characters become stereotypes
