PREPARATION FOR ASSESSMENT TASK 1: DRAWING THE THREADS

In class we have been studying power and how it has been used during this century. We have looked at a picture book called Rose Blanche, and studied a novel called The Wave. Recently we visited the Holocaust Institute where you had an opportunity to see photographs of the persecution of the Jewish people from 1933-1945 and to listen to 2 speakers. In the first week back next term, you will be completing Assessment Task 1: A prepared oral response referring to ONE literary text and ONE transactional text.

ASSESSMENT TASK 1 IN DETAIL

 

  1. Specific Outcomes
  2. a. Outcome 2: Read transactional and literary texts with purpose and understanding

    b. Outcome 5: Speak coherently and with confidence for different audiences and purposes

  3. Task Description

You will need to present a two minute oral response to ONE transactional text and a two minute oral response to ONE literary text, selected from those above.

You should focus on:

  1. understanding the text, main ideas, themes and values, and the main features of narratives – plot, setting, character and conflict.
  2. Developing an understanding of the features of transactional texts and distinguish between fact and opinion, making inferences and recognising values, attitudes, purpose and audience.
  3. Expressing personal ideas and opinions as you respond to all the above
  4. Oraganising information and ideas logically and coherently
  5. Shaping language, both verbal and non-verbal, for meaning and effect.

OUTCOME 2 : Read transactional and literary texts with purpose and understanding
SATISFACTORY HIGH VERY HIGH
The student will read a range of literary and transactional texts with some sense of purpose, identifying content and main ideas (plot, characters, themes and conflicts) The student will read with purpose and comprehend main and subordinate ideas and identify narrative features in a range of transactional and literary texts, referring to the effects of these on the audience. The student will read widely with a strong sense of purpose, selecting texts written for various purposes and audiences, comprehending ideas and issues and discussing the effects of selected narrative and transactional features

 

 

OUTCOME 5 : Speak coherently and with confidence for different audiences and purposes
SATISFACTORY HIGH VERY HIGH
The student will speak clearly, demonstrating confidence in speaking in front of the class and adapting spoken language to purpose and audience. The student will speak clearly and confidently speaking in front of the class, adapting spoken language to purpose, and audience. Confidence is seen through proper posture and minimal reference to palm cards and eye contact. The student will confidently undertake and coherently communicate to fellow students, to achieve purpose. Coherence is seen through logical progression of ideas and an ability to keep the audience enthralled.
