SENTENCES

 

Sentences can be divided into Simple and Compound/Complex sentences

IN order for a number of words to be a SIMPLE SENTENCE a number of things are required.

The following are sentences because they contain all the above.

The following are not sentences because one or more of the above is/are missing

COMPOUND SENTENCES

This type of sentence structure is found when the sentence gets a little longer and is really 2 sentences joined together by a CONJUNCTION such as "and’ , "but", "so" etc.

Rewrite the following sentences. Join the two simple sentences in each by using suitable conjunctions.

  1. I fell from the ladder. I broke my arm.
  2. We went to the play. It was not enjoyable.
  3. We could have a steak for lunch. We could have chicken.

COMPLEX SENTENCES

These sentences are called complex because they are more sophisticated. They require more sophisticated conjunctions and more than one verb .In these sentences there is one main idea but other ideas that depend on it as well.

Eg. The boy, who came to visit us, went home because he was feeling sick.

This sentence could have been written as :

Simple Sentences

The boy came to visit us . He went home ( 2 simple sentences )

 

 

Compound sentence.

 

The boy came to visit us and went home. ( A compound sentence with 1 joiner )

 

The boy came to visit us and went home because he was sick. ( A compound sentence with 2 joiners )

Complex sentence.

The boy, who came to visit us, went home because he was feeling sick. ( A complex sentence with better joiners)

Aunty Jean stayed with us. We were too young to be left alone. Aunty Jean stayed with us because we were too young to be left alone. When our parents were overseas, Aunty Jean stayed with us because we were too young to be left alone.
