SUMMARY OF "HOMELESSNESS" ARTICLE- overhead version

Following is an example of a summary of an article in different stages. Its aim is to help students see how summaries work, by resummarising each summary until a theme is discovered. The article is taken from Frankston Standard, 11 April 1994, a local Frankston paper in Australia.

1. Homelessness means different things and the workers at Frankston’s Youth Access Centre(YAC) understand it well; its causes and what it can lead to- especially as they process 16,000 youth a year.

The causes are quite clear. Pressures in today’s society have led to family breakdown, leading to child abuse and domestic violence. In turn, young people leave the home more often, now emotionally affected and with feelings of isolation. Even if they remain at school, their problems remain.

This is where the YAC intervene through their various programmes. Not only do they cater for the bare essentials; they also provide education, counselling and encouragement in order to provide these troubled youth with an opportunity to meet their potential and find employment.

This is where the YAC intervene with their various programmes, helping youth, not only with the bare essentials but with education, counselling and hope for employment and a brighter future.

3. The staff at Frankston's Youth Access Centre have designed various programmes, to enable homeless victims of domestic violence and child abuse, reverse the effects of their homelessness. They do so by supplying education, the bare esentials, and an opportunity for employment.
