A Message to My Protestant Friends

Please note: Some Non-Catholic Christians may question the 'Christian' quality of my pages, motivated by a particular presumption about what the Catholic Church teaches. In order to avoid stereotypical accusations about the Catholic faith, please note the following key points:

• I do accept Christ as my only Savior and Lord
• A devotion to the saints , in particular Mary, the mother of Jesus, is NOT equivalent to idolatory. This is often poorly understood.
• Yes, I do believe that Christians can become deceived - whether they be Catholic OR Non-Catholic. Therefore, we must always remember Christ's words to Peter when the Father FIRST revealed to Peter, and only Peter, the true identity of Christ. Jesus replied, "You are Peter (petros) and on this rock (petra) I will build my Church and the gates of Hell will NEVER prevail against it". We know, as Christians that the Prince of Lies abides in Hell. Jesus renamed Simon and gave him the title of the Rock - so that his faith (and therefore the faith of all his successors) would continue to safeguard the truth in the Church, safe from the attack of Satan. A close look at the different Protestant/Non-denominational groups reveals that they hold different beliefs and therefore may not hold the fullness of truth which Christ left His Church and which the Holy Spirit maintains in the Church. (Please note, Peter would always retain the truth even though he continued to sin personally like all of us. So too, the role of Pope, built on the "Rock" would always maintain the truth, even though the Pope would also sin on a personal level and in administrative matters on occasion. Christ tells us however, that the successors of Peter would safeguard the truth always - Christ's own guarantee that the 'gates of Hell' would not prevail.)
• I believe in the Apostles Creed and attest to that faith with all my heart
• I believe that much of the criticism which the Catholic Church faces comes from a misunderstanding of TRUE Catholic teaching and its SCRIPTURAL BASIS
• I encourage Non-Catholic Christians to be open to reading and reflecting on what the Catholic Church truly teaches.
• I do not believe that personal interpretation of Scripture is necessarily correct. Peter himself tells us that (2 Peter 3:14 - 16)

• We may not be unstable or ignorant in many things, but all of us can make mistakes. How important then is our need to KNOW for certainty that our interpretation of the Scriptures is TRUE? The Scriptures themselves give us a very clear answer - this time easy to interpret - Timothy gives us the remedy. (1 Timothy 3:14 - 15)

• I believe, therefore, that in matters of FAITH and TRUTH and MORALS, the Catholic Church - under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, through the office of the Pope (the successor of Peter and the 'Rock" in our times) - cannot lead us blindly - Jesus promised us that - and we can see why we need this certainty.
