• What are the effects of this perception on student faith response and the effectiveness of the Religious Education Programme offered in Catholic Schools?

We have already established that the students are affected by their peers.

• 60 %(44) said 'It's normal' is one reason for their response in question 3 ( listening to music regardless of content, watching r rated films etc. )
• 71% (56) that the actions were modern. Obviously the Church isn't because the negative reaction to RE is partly due to the content being
• irrelevant 47 %(19)
• Not true to our reality 40 % ( 19)
• 27 % said the ideas are not supported by most people in society
• 25% (38) said negative images of the Church were portrayed in the media.
• 35% (25) this is all old stuff

Naturally, therefore the content of Religious Education will be affected. Below is what the students said they feel society considers normal. Remember, 60% of students feel that normality is important in deciding on actions.

• How can it be possible for students to view Christianity, and therefore Religious Education, as 'cool'?

The results of the 16 as compared to the 55 are important here.

The following charts show that the 16 responded differently to the rest with regards to the respect shown to the Church and altruistic figures. The 16 did not generally place the Pope last as the green line indicates.

Mother Teresa scored quite well considering.

As did a kind priest or religious.

Their overall deeper respect for parents may be a factor in the relatively more positive view of figures of authority and the Church
