The Mardi Gras in Sydney, 1995

In an age when the distinction between the homosexual person and the homosexual lifestyle has become distorted, it is important that we do not lose our ability to question and look critically at what the dominant culture tells us we need to accept. It is good and right for the Christian Educator to stress the dignity of all people including the person with a homosexual orientation, who, like all, has much to offer society and can live out their Christian Vocation. However, it is a different matter to then accept everything about the lifestyle of an active homosexual. The following contains just some of the disturbing facts about the Mardi Gras in Sydney Australia in March 1995. Is this what we also wish our students to accept?

  1. It grossed $40 million for the Australian economy.
  2. 18 years ago , there were 500 marchers . Police arrested them. Now, their efforts are seen as praiseworthy and an expression of culture.
  3. Described as one of a kind in the world.
  4. " If when we die we don’t go to Heaven at least we’ll have been to Sydney "
  5. Gay people are in the Professional Middle-class in influential positions.
