QUOTE or IMPRESSION

Change in Church practice between 4th and 8th centuries – centralisation "Still a problem today sometimes, Rome and centralisation"
Change in Church practice between 8th and 16th centuries – move to the way the Pope did things " We get agro about that today I suppose"

Fr. also mocked a priest who likes the Latin Mass and made fun of the Roman Liturgical Chant / Choirs

Mass People started praying the Rosary as a result of the separation between priest and assembly. While the people prayed to Our Lady, the Priest prayed to Christ. (This dichotomy is a false one and very simplistic)
Jansenism "The Church didn’t clamp down on this popular movement. Church started making rules about sex because of this. Augustine was the start of it"
Communion Communion on tongue explained as a sign of people’s feeling of unworthiness. This was presented in a very biased way. The impression gained was that receiving on tongue was negative and only the result of simple beliefs. NO CLARIFICATION was given and no sensitivity shown for those who choose to receive on the tongue. Benediction presented as another result of this – adoration of Sacrament grew. " You couldn’t eat him but you could look at him. You could go to communion if you went to confession".

" Everything was about adoring" [presented as if this was very wrong]

"You can’t touch Jesus…Father, the holy one " could.

"The whole thing was take and eat, not take and suck". (Great laughter arose from this because of Father’s sarcasm).

Father told a JOKE about a little boy who had received in the hand and who had given the host to her mother who later returned it to Father from her bag, after Mass. It was a big joke for many people. Father treated it as such as well.

Communion particles The people in the Early Church "were not too worried about crumbs and all that stuff….is that Christ on the floor"? (Great laughter again followed this as Fr. mocked the sacredness of every particle of the host and the Church’s sensitivity to the Host. What about the Didache?)
Reformation period Luther – "I’ve got a great love for Luther"
Fast for Mass Fr. best described the fast as responsible for ulcers.
Vatican Two Less emphasis on devotion and more on participation (not clarified)

Communion on the Hand restored. (Not clarified)

Purification Prayer said by Priest before consecration. "…cleanse me from all my sin" Mocked – described as having come about because in the early days chooks etc. were offered and Father had to wash his hands"

(Once again everyone laughed – Fr. then recognised the beauty of the ritual today but I think it was only after someone commented on the beauty of it).

Non-Catholics and Communion No reference made to documents concerning this. Father IMPLIED " Who really cares if they come up for communion and they are not Catholic " although he admitted that there are rules. "Most priests are flexible about these things"
Catechism Made about 3 –4 negative references to the ‘language’ used in the CCC
Pope "Maybe there’ll be a bit of movement, perhaps after our next Pope"
Reconciliation in Early Church Makes reference to the Three major sins which needed to be forgiven – Adultery, Apostacy, Murder. The impression given was that these seem to be the only sins we should be worried about confessing today. I noted in my notes as an side " What about Jesus’ words that to look at a woman lustfully means committing adultery in the heart"
Third Rite of Reconciliation "I AGREE WITH THE CHURCH HERE regarding Third Rite not being the ONLY one and the danger of it for the First and Second Rites" (My emphasis. No clarification given on the nature of the Third Rite and the fact that it is only to be used in special circumstances, never really warranted in a school situation at all although I have seen it used)
Scrupulosity Blamed on the Council of Trent
