Founder of the Society of the Precious
Blood (C.PP.S.). Gaspar was born in Rome on January 6, 1786. Early in life
Gaspar served the poor, the sick and the outcast.
Gaspar was ordained for the diocese of
Rome on July 31, 1808. Gaspar was a very gifted and popular preacher.
Shortly after his ordination Gaspar, along with all the clergy of Rome, was
forced to take an oath of allegiance to Napoleon who had suppressed the Papal
States. Gaspar refused to take an oath stating: “I would rather die or suffer
evil than to take such an oath. I cannot, I must not, I will not.” Because
of this response Gaspar was exiled and imprisoned.
While in prison, Gaspar envisioned the
possibility of a community of men dedicated to the spirituality of the Precious
Blood. On August 15, 1815, Gaspar founded the Society of the Precious
Blood. He invited his newly formed Community to live in mission houses
in a bond of charity and to be missionaries of the Word by preaching missions
and retreats.
Gaspar died on December 28, 1837.
On June 12, 1954, Gaspar was canonized a saint of the Church.
