The 60-Second Aquinas Lesson

Thomistic Philosophy: Why Bother?

Aquinas Lesson for June 27, 1998

When your mother told you, "Because I said so," did you buy it? Doubtful.

A frustrated critic of the Church’s teaching on contraception once said "You can’t just blindly accept what Rome says." Well, okay. That’s kind of the same thing, right?

If Pope John Paul II were to say, "It is wrong to wear a blue shirt with brown pants," I might agree with the critic. It’s amazing, though. The popes, when they speak or write, typically do so on matters of moral and religious import. Also amazing, what they say typically has foundations in scripture and philosophy, often the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas.

So, if blind acceptance isn’t good enough for you, do the research. But don’t think that because the pope says it, we are blindly accepting his word. His word is inspired by God, scripture, and philosophic study. And, anyone who questions the teachings of the Church and the individual popes should pick up Aquinas’ Summa Theologica and read it!

As for contraception specifically, read yesterday’s lesson. The teaching really does make sense.
