Greek term for the sayings of Jesus that are reported to exist in a separate and distinct collection, possibly compiled by Saint Matthew, and embodied partially in the present first gospel and partially in the third. There is no definitive evidence such a document, and Catholics are directed by the Biblical Commission to accept the present Greek text of the first gospel as substantially identical with the Aramaic text written by Saint Matthew.
