Germanic ancestry. While archdeacon he was nominated by Pope Saint Felix, who feared a schism, as his successor. After Felix died, the Roman clergy elected Dioscorus. Both were consecrated, but the schism ended in 22 days when Dioscorus died and Boniface became the 55th pope. During his pontificate the Semi-Pelagian controversy was ended by the Second Council of Orange.
