Member of the nobility. Oversaw flood control projects in Ravenna, Italy. Papal nuncio to Naples for Pope Innocent X. Secretary of the Congregation of Bishops and Regulars for Pope Alexander VII. Superintendent of the papal exchequer for Pope Clement IX. Created cardinal by Pope Clement IX, having previously turned down the honour in favour of another. 239th pope in 1670 at the age of 80 after a four month conclave. A quiet reign in which he suffered from very poor health. Most government responsibility fell on his nephew, Cardinal Altieri. Worked to preserve peace in Europe. Supported the Poles against invading Turks.
