Pope CLEMENT XI

Profile

Known in his youth as a brilliant and learned student. Bishop of Rieti. Bishop of Sabina. Bishop of Orvieto. Cardinal in 1690. 243rd Pope in 1700. Dragged into the struggle between France and Austria over the throne of Spain; Clement initially recognized Philip V, but was forced to recognize Charles of Hapsburg. The chief spiritual concern of his pontificate was that of Jansenism. The 1705 brief Vineam Domini condemned the Jansenist ideas on papal infallibility, and in 1713 he issued the bull Unigenitus, which condemned other Jansenist beliefs.
