"Jesus was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him." Mt 17:2-3

The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord remembers when Jesus gave the apostles, Peter, James and John, a flash of his divinity. This event gives a glimpse of Jesus being both fully human and fully divine. This event is considered by many to be the climax of Jesus' public life which began at his Baptism and ended at the Ascencion. As well as giving a glimpse of Jesus' divinity, this event also is one more proof of Jesus' authenticity. True Judaism, represented by Moses, the Law, and Elijah, the Prophets, recognized and adored Him, while for the second time God the Father proclaimed Him His only-begotten and well-loved Son.
The account of the Transfiguration is very similar throughout the Synoptic Gospels. In the timeline of Jesus' life the Transfiguration occurs after Peter's revelation that Jesus is the Messiah and before Jesus' second prediction of his passion and death. |
